They are demanding the Chinese regime withdraw its remaining ship from a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

[Emman Hizon, Akbayan Party Spokesperson]:
"We are calling the Chinese government to immediately pull out its remaining vessels in the area to diffuse the tension and end the stalemate between the Philippine naval forces and the shipping vessels."

The protesters demanded an apology from the Chinese regime for marine poaching. But they also hope for a peaceful resolution.

[Emman Hizon, Akbayan Party Spokesperson]:
"We believe the best position that we can do on the matter is to resolve this through peaceful and diplomatic means through using multilateral approach and by using ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) as a platform."

Chinese and Philippine mediators failed to end the standoff between the two countries on Monday. It started last week when a Philippines warship tried to arrest several Chinese fishermen for illegal poaching.

Over the weekend, all eight Chinese fishing boats left the area with one of the surveillance ships. A second Chinese surveillance ship remains with one Philippine Coast Guard vessel.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino said Monday he doesn't want a war with China.
But Aquino said the Philippine government maintains its claim on Scarborough Shoal.

Chinese officials say the area is part of Chinese territory. This is despite maps showing the shoal is much closer to the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities ordered a Philippine-registered yacht doing archaeological research in the disputed shoal to leave immediately.

The Philippines accused Chinese authorities of harassing the researchers.
