To some degree, you don’t need a written recap of Layton Greene’s musical blossoming. A diary of her trials and triumphs can be found in the vids she’s shared with fans during her impressive rise these last two years. The Missouri native, who has the power to disarm listeners with her straight talk about frustrating impasses and real-deal hardships, has cataloged her life in emotional episodes. Check “Blame on Me” for a chilling look at the hurdles she overcame growing up in East St. Louis. Absorb “I Love You” and “Open Wounds” for a feel of the anger that blooms in fractured romances. And be prepared for some goose bumps. The 20-year-old R&B singer boasts a Mary J Blige vibe, where gritty drama is transformed into life lessons. The impact of her talent became obvious a few years ago, when this fledgling vocalist (a dedicated Keyshia Cole fan) sang over Kodak Black’s “Roll In Peace” and an on-line audience exploded in a matter of months. Greene had gone through a homeless phase, rode the ups-and-downs of rocky relationships, and was studying for a GED and working the aisles of WalMart when she learned that people loved her voice. Soon enough, she was ramping up her game with producer G-Styles and being wooed by label bigwigs. She chose the Quality Control crew, becoming the only non-rapper on the impressive Southern roster, and she’s refined her already-forceful sound since the start of the year; her ‘Tell Ya Story’ EP teems with catchy confessions.
