You’re not gonna miss Matt Stell. The singer behind “Prayed For You” is 6’7,” which just might make him the tallest dude in country music. Before he started writing songs and developing a regional following down South, the Arkansas native put that stature to good use by being part of hoops squads in both high school and college. But one lonely winter break, when the team had to remain on campus for practice while other students headed home, he picked up a pal’s guitar and started strumming to kill time. It was an a-ha moment, and this philosophy and religion major’s focus turned to music. He played blues and southern rock in local bars under the name Paul Wayne Walker so his coach wouldn’t know he had outside interests, and started writing songs. Turns out Stell's got a knack for lyrics, coming up with vivid phrases like “we’ll drink whiskey mixed with moonlight.” A few years ago he made his impressive ‘A River Through It’ EP, but things really changed in the summer of 2018 when the poignant power ballad "Prayed For You" captured the feels of everyone who’s ever had a romantic dream come true. With massive numbers on Vevo and Spotify, the song is part of Stell’s ‘Everywhere But On’ EP, which is brimming over with other country gems, like “I Bet Whiskey Would.” And he likes to throw some curves at us, too. This Merle Haggard fan, whose early record collection included Hootie’s ‘Cracked Rear Mirror’ and Alanis’ ‘Jagged Little Pill,’ does a sweet cover of Ariana’s “God Is a Woman,” and dreams of hitting the studio with Kendrick Lamar. This past spring he debuted at the Grand Ole Opry, bringing fans what he calls “big, dark sounding songs that almost sound like arena rock but with country instrumentation: Arenacana.” You’ll def get the feel when you see him in action in these Artists To Watch performances.
