Sports Team - Fishing - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.

Don’t worry, Sports Team are charmingly aware of the fact that the cool kids don’t love the rock lingo anymore. “There’s no money in guitar music,” guitarist Rob Knaggs explained to Vice earlier this year. “The press aren’t really looking at it...so if you’re not having fun, why are you doing it?” In our estimation, the UK outfit is having an absolute blast while “doing it.” Sports Team’s trademark love-it-or-leave-it attitude epitomizes the group’s buzzy ascension into indie rock acclaim. While studying at Cambridge and “listening to Pavement all the time,” the brainy teens cooked up a genius recipe for packing clubs: be really, really fun to watch on stage. Stuck in a lackluster DIY music scene at the prestigious-but-stuffy university, the sextet embarked on a mission to attract crowds purely through captivating live spectacles. “So much of it is about self-confidence,” says Alex Rice, the band’s raucous frontman. “Because if you’re not prepared to get up there and try to make yourself look like an idiot for a little bit, who is gonna believe in it?” This March, hordes of ecstatic believers turned up at a rowdy sold-out show at Camden’s Electric Ballroom. In June, BBC tastemaker Annie Mac named the band’s 2018 single “Kutcher” Radio 1’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’ (yes, the song is indeed an extended metaphor for a relationship resembling that of Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore). As of recently the band was living together in Kent, creating a WhatsApp group chat for their fans and joking about how they have more floor space on the road than at home. In October, a tour with indie rock heroes Two Door Cinema Club found Sports Team playing stadiums across the UK. That means more eyes, more ears and more bodies to respond to new music, like “The Races” and “Fishing,” which they tore up during their Artists To Watch performances. Try not to go too nuts when you blast ‘em at top volume.
