U2 Cover Neil Young's 'Southern Man' In 1987 <br /> <br />When the four members of U2 first began gigging around Dublin as Feedback in 1976 they barely knew how to play their instruments, let alone write original songs. That meant their show was devoted entirely to the hits of the day, which meant covering Peter Frampton, the Bay City Rollers, Thin Lizzy and the Eagles. "We were," Bono has often said, "the world's worst cover band." <br /> <br />It took about four years of steady work and plenty of disastrous early attempts (check out "Cartoon World" for proof), but U2 eventually became incredible songwriters. By 1980 their shows were almost 100% original songs, but every once in a while they'd sneak in a cover. Neil Young's "Southern Man" slipped onto the setlist in 1982, and for reasons that remain baffling it kept popping up again and again through the 1980s. They even played it the week The Joshua Tree hit shelves in March of 1987 when they appeared on The Old Grey Whistle Test, opting to skip new originals like "Where The Streets Have No Name," "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." (Bono also changed the name of a character in the song from Lilly Belle to Billy Joe.) <br /> <br />Judge for yourself how successfully they handle the song, but there's probably a reason the group hasn't resurrected it once in the past twenty-seven years. Oddly enough, it wasn't even their craziest TV song selection of the era. A few months earlier, midway through recording The Joshua Tree, they went on Irish TV and played their in-progress (and ultimately discarded) song "Womanfish." "We agreed to do that in a moment of dementia," the Edge said years later. "We hadn't shot ourselves in the foot for a while, so with two songs half written we decided it was the perfect time to go to the nation to showcase our 'new direction.' Harvest est le 4e album solo de Neil Young, sorti le 14 février 1972 chez Reprise Records. Classé numéro un du Billboard 200 pendant deux semaines, avec deux hits, Old Man et Heart of Gold, l'album Harvest fut la meilleure vente d'albums de l'année aux États-Unis. Il fut jugé par les critiques comme l’un des albums majeurs de l'histoire du rock et le plus emblématique de Neil Young. <br />Enregistrement <br />L'album Harvest est marqué par la spontanéité et la simplicité avec lesquelles il fut enregistré. <br />Les morceaux comprenant des parties de guitare électrique ont été enregistrés dans une grange du ranch de Neil Young, en Californie. Mazer utilisa un système d'enregistrement à distance et installa des haut-parleurs dans la grange pour le monitoring, au lieu de fournir des casques à chaque musicien. Les enregistrements comportaient par conséquent beaucoup de "bruit", chaque micro repiquant les sons des autres instruments, mais le résultat produit plut à Mazer et Young. Are You Ready for the Country, Alabama et Words ont été enregistrés lors de ces sessions, avec Buttrey, Drummond, Keith, ainsi que Jack Nitzsche au piano et au lap steel. Young appela ce groupe les Stray Gators, qui l'accompagna lors de sa tournée de l'hiver 1973. <br /> <br />A Man Needs a Maid et There's a World furent enregistrés par Nitsche avec le London Symphony Orchestra et The Needle and the Damage Done fut capturé lors d'un live à UCLA. Les chœurs de Crosby, Stills & Nash furent enregistrés par Mazer à New York. <br />L'album a été mixé au studio Quadrafonic et chez Neil Young. L'effet stéréo fut obtenu en plaçant le canal gauche dans les haut-parleurs situés dans la grange et le canal droit dans des haut-parleurs placés dans la maison.

Neil Young (12 novembre 1945 à Toronto - ) est un auteur-compositeur-interprète et un guitariste de folk, country et rock canadien. Il est devenu l'un des musiciens les plus respectés et influents de sa génération. Commercialement, son apogée se situe au début des années 1970 avec des albums solo comme After the Gold Rush ou Harvest (1972) en plus de son rôle dans le très populaire groupe Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. <br /><br />La « marque de fabrique » de Neil Young est aisément reconnaissable, notamment par sa voix haut-perchée et ses textes très personnels. Ses chansons relèvent la plupart du temps de deux styles bien distincts : le premier, un folk-rock acoustique mâtiné de country comme dans les chansons Heart Of Gold, Old Man ou Long May You Run, et le deuxième, une forme de hard rock lancinant aux guitares saturées que l'on retrouve dans Cinnamon Girl, Southern Man et Rockin' in the Free World, ces chansons étant le plus souvent enregistrées avec Crazy Horse, le groupe qui l'a accompagné durant la plus grande partie de sa carrière. <br /><br />Il s'est néanmoins aventuré dans de nombreux styles : soul, swing, musique électronique.
