With the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics just five months away from kicking off in the Japanese capital,... the COVID-19 outbreak is raising concerns about whether the world's biggest and most-celebrated sporting event might have to be called off.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
The Tokyo Marathon scheduled for March 1st will be held on a much smaller scale than originally planned this year in the light of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Roughly 38-thousand amateur runners will not be allowed to participate,... instead it'll be limited to only 200 elite runners and wheelchair participants.
However, the bigger concern is the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games that's scheduled to start on July 24th.
As the COVID-19 outbreak is not yet under control,... there are concerns over whether the event could even take place.
The WHO says it hasn't made a decision on the matter.
"We have not offered advice to the IOC for the Olympics one way or the other, and neither would we. It is not the role of WHO to call off or not call off any event. It is the role of WHO to offer technical advice, to support a considered a multi-layered risk assessment around an event, to offer advice on risk reduction and risk mitigation measures, to offer advice on risk response measures and it is the decision of hosting countries and the organizing agencies to make that decision."
According to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee chairman,... the committee isn't even considering cancelling or delaying the event,... and will press on with the Olympics regardless.
Citing a Japanese virologist,... the New York Post reported on Wednesday,... that if the Olympics were to happen tomorrow,... they would have to be cancelled.
The Tokyo organizing committee and the IOC have reiterated that they're going to continue following the advice of the WHO.
It raises the possibility that, if the outbreak spreads further,... the Tokyo 2020 Olympics could be postponed or completely called off.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, January 9, 2020 - Indonesia edged past Iran in a five-set thriller 3-2 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12) in their last match of the AVC Women’s Tokyo Volleyball Qualification tournament at Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima on Thursday.

Indonesia captain Tri Retno Mutiara Lutfi said: "We didn’t have any pressure before the match. In the first two sets we played well with good teamwork but in the next two sets our game slowed down and we let our opponents come back to their game. But in the fifth set we trusted each other again and won the set.

"After this we will go back to our country for the volleyball league season. Thank you to the Thai fans who came to cheer for us. It was a good experience for our team to play in this tournament.”

Iran head coach Mitra Shabanian said: "I think my players did a good job today and they are getting better and better day by day. We and Indonesia team are at the same level, but Indonesia have more experience than us.

"I hope my young players will improve more and have a bright future."

Iran team captain Elham Fallah said: "In the first two sets we couldn’t play well and after that we came back to the match and won the next two sets. In the fifth set we lost because our young players lacked experience.

"We are very happy to compete in this tournament and we can pick up good experience. We hope to have better performances in the future."

Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.

In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.

Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

She's set her sights on competing in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, where she'd be Britain's youngest ever summer Olympian. It'll be the first time skateboarding will be an official sport at the Olympics.

Sky is working on a new move, the backside 540, which involves spinning around one-and-a-half times towards your toes.

Sky is also helping other children to achieve their dreams. She talks to Sokly in Cambodia, who is being helped by Indochina Starfish Foundation (ISF) and tells Sky how her life has changed.

As we've come to expect from these bi-annual crossover minigame collections, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 packs a colorful and recognizable cast and a fair amount of fun into exciting, bite-sized mini-games that highlight some of the most iconic events in the Olympics. But there are also some duds, including a painful story mode. Even though the colorful and recognizable cast of characters injects a great amount of diversity and personality into the events, the relatively small retro sampling and lackluster multiplayer features hold it back from scoring Gold.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, January 9, 2020 - Indonesia edged past Iran in a five-set thriller 3-2 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12) in their last match of the AVC Women’s Tokyo Volleyball Qualification tournament at Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima on Thursday.

Indonesia captain Tri Retno Mutiara Lutfi said: "We didn’t have any pressure before the match. In the first two sets we played well with good teamwork but in the next two sets our game slowed down and we let our opponents come back to their game. But in the fifth set we trusted each other again and won the set.

"After this we will go back to our country for the volleyball league season. Thank you to the Thai fans who came to cheer for us. It was a good experience for our team to play in this tournament.”

Iran head coach Mitra Shabanian said: "I think my players did a good job today and they are getting better and better day by day. We and Indonesia team are at the same level, but Indonesia have more experience than us.

"I hope my young players will improve more and have a bright future."

Iran team captain Elham Fallah said: "In the first two sets we couldn’t play well and after that we came back to the match and won the next two sets. In the fifth set we lost because our young players lacked experience.

"We are very happy to compete in this tournament and we can pick up good experience. We hope to have better performances in the future."

In 1924 in Paris, flatwater canoeing featured at the Games as a demonstration sport. Canoe and kayak racing became full medal sports at the 1936 Berlin Games. However events were initially limited to canoe sprint until canoe slalom made its debut at the 1972 Munich Games. Slalom racing was not competed again in the Olympic Games until the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Footage from the 1988 Seoul Olympics in which Ukrainian Olympic legend Sergey Bubka claims Gold and breaks the Olympic record in the process in the Pole Vault.

In Seoul 1988, Bubka had his first opportunity to shine in the Olympic Games, having stayed out of Los Angeles four years earlier due to the Soviet Union boycott.

Representing the USSR in Seoul, Sergey Bubka broke the Olympic record with a 5.90m mark which also gave him the Olympic gold medal. His fellow Soviets Rodion Gataullin and Grigoriy Yegorov join him on the podium.

Bubka would still compete in the Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as "artistic", such as climbing and acrobatics.

The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.

Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.

In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.

Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Australia's Steven Bradbury achieves an unexpected gold medal in the short tack speed skating event, taking advantage of a mistake causing his fellow finalists to fall at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Coming into the five-man final, Steven Bradbury was the rank outsider and as the race progressed his chances looked slimmer with each passing lap. But as the leading quartet rounded the final bend, Lia Jiajun (CHN) tried an over-ambitious overtaking manoeuvre outside Apollo Ohno (USA), sending them both onto the ice and bringing down Mathieu Turcotte (CAN) and Ahn Hyun-soo (KOR) in the process. This left the way clear for a nonplussed Bradbury to cross the line unchallenged and claim the most unexpected of gold medals.

The Olympic Cauldron is lit at an atmospheric opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games on 27 July 2012.

Every two years, the world's finest athletes gather at the Olympic Games - a spectacular celebration of sporting excellence that captures the attention of billions of people around the world. The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang just had their closing ceremony and that means the world turns it's attention to Japan.
The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games are 2 years away, and here is what we know right now.

▶︎ WHEN ARE THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES?
July 24, 2020 to August 9, 2020

▶︎ The New National Stadium
It's built on the same site as the 1964 Olympic Stadium.
Designed by Kengo Kuma, it's a very natural design surrounded by a lot of trees and parks.

▶︎ The Venues:
There are 34 Venues separated into 2 zones.

▶︎ Heritage and Tokyo Bay:
The Heritage zone is where the 1964 Olympics took place.
Tokyo Bay is where the aquatics center, BMX and Skateboard course will be as well as other event.
There are 12 events outside of these zones including foot / soccer, baseball, basketball.

▶︎ Ticket Prices for Tokyo 2020 Olympics:
The average ticket price will be 7,700 yen ($72)
and the opening and closing ceremonies will be between 25,000 yen ($235) and 150,000 yen ($1,400). Tickets will be sold online and at designated ticket centers in Tokyo.

There are 33 sports for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics including 5 new ones:

Aquatics, Archery, Athetics, Badminton, Baseball / Softball, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Field Hockey, Football / Soccer, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Judo, Karate
Modern pentathlon, Rowing, Rugby sevens, Sailing, Shooting, Skateboarding, Sport climbing, Surfing, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling

Within these sports, there are 324 events.
Football / soccer actually starts 2 days before the opening ceremonies.

Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.

In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.

Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.

In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.

Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Cuba's Leuris Pupo wins the gold medal with a score of 30 in the final of the men's 25m rapid fire pistol shooting event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3 August).

India's Vijay Kumar won silver in the event with China's Feng Ding claiming bronze.

From just five shooting events at the inaugural 1896 Olympic Games to today there are 15 events in the Olympic programme, divided into three different groups: rifle, pistol and shotgun. The rifle and pistol competitions are held on shooting ranges, where marksmen aim at targets at distances of 10, 25 and 50 metres. In the shotgun event, competitors shoot at clay targets propelled at a series of different directions and angles.

At the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics Jamaica sent an unexpected team to compete in the bobsleigh event.

Though their participation did not end in medal glory, the team won the hearts of their fans and competitors, returning to future games as equals.

The Jamaican athletes were - nonetheless - determined to excel at the Games and had their fastest start so far in their final run. However, during the run, the sled crashed in one of the turns which took away the teams possibility of an officially recorded time.

Full highlights from the Women's Uneven Bars Final from the North Greenwich Arena at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Russia's Aliya Mustafina won Gold with China's He Kexin in Silver and Great Britain's Elizabeth Tweddle with the Bronze medal.

Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as "artistic", such as climbing and acrobatics.

The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome.
