One common question I receive is whether property owners also own or have exclusive usage rights to the sidewalk and road in front of their property.

Those are typically government owned and for public use. E.g. the sidewalks are for pedestrians and the roads are for vehicles.

This question usually comes up because people see sidewalks that have been blocked by chain fences, signs placed in the road to “reserve” parking, garages erected on the sidewalk and in some cases whole buildings that extended their walls.

Even though I see it every day, it still amazes me every time I see a property that has increased their space by extending their walls over the sidewalk. I just can’t imagine how anyone could ever think it’s okay.
