1. 100 million people come to India's Kumbh Mela Festival, the world's biggest gathering of humans. The Kumbh Mela (or Grand Pitcher Festival) is a huge Hindu religious festival that takes place in India every 12 years.

2. The Golden Temple in India feeds a vegetarian meal to over 100,000 people a day regardless of race, religion and class.

3. India has more population than the entire Western Hemisphere of Earth. In fact, India is expected to be the world's most populous country by 2050. With 1.6 billion people, it will almost equal the U.S. and China's population combined.

4. While Beijing's pollution problem is more famous, the world's most polluted city is New Delhi, India.

5. Gypsies are a part of the Indian nation. They are originally from North West India, specifically the regions of Punjab and Rajasthan. In fact, even today there are gypsy populations living there, like the Domba or Banjara people. The Rajasthani Banjara people celebrate death as one of the happiest events in their lives, while treating births with great grief.

6. India has three of the world's top ten megacities - one more than China. According to the UN, Delhi is now the second-largest urban agglomeration in the world, with Mumbai ranked seventh and Calcutta tenth. The population of Delhi and its immediate urban hinterland is now over 22.65 million, and is only surpassed by Tokyo.

7. The name 'India' is derived from the River Indus, the valleys around which were the home of the early settlers. The Aryan worshippers referred to the river Indus as the Sindhu. The Persian invaders converted it into Hindu. The name 'Hindustan' combines Sindhu and Hindu and thus refers to the land of the Hindus. The Aryans also recorded the Vedas, the first Hindu scriptures, and introduced a caste system based on ethnicity and occupation.
