The Quran is a powerful critique of injustice, exploitation and oppression. Its critique is coupled with a diagnosis that spiritual diseases are the root of social ills. Those who transgress the bounds of justice are those who are afflicted with a sickness of the heart, which has caused a loss of perspective on the nature of this life and the implications of our actions in the life to come.
.
The Quran exhorts us to be, “those who believe and do righteous actions.” Inner transformation and societal transformation are eternally linked. We cannot be faithful to our Creator if we are not working for justice in this world; and we cannot truly work for justice in this world without seeing this world in light of the next. The horizontal is interwoven with the vertical; worldly matters are inseparable from the eternal.
.
Through an engagement with the Sacred Scripture and the Prophetic Precedent, this series will consider the roots of racism, white supremacy, greed, and oppression, and examine Prophetic responses and cures to these sicknesses. We will explore ways we, as individuals, and as an ummah can uphold the precious prophetic inheritance. Inspired action is needed more than ever to heal our suffering world.
