Maybe you should stick to singing? Ed Sheeran struggles to stay on the track during Top Gear filming.

Life in the fast lane: Ed Sheeran takes the driving seat for Top Gear challenge... despite not having his licence

He constantly tops the charts and boasts the best-selling album of 2014 in the UK.

And now Ed Sheeran has turned his hand to a new kind of record, racing against the clock for Top Gear's Star In A Reasonably Priced Car segment in a bid to top the celebrity leaderboard.

The Thinking Out Loud singer performed a lap in an automatic Vauxhall Astra on Wednesday morning, despite not having a driving licence.

The 23-year-old redhead, clad in a grey jumper and a white helmet, was beaming as he prepared to get behind the wheel for the very first time.

Ed isn't the first star to take to the track at Dunsfold Park in Surrey without a licence, however.

Comedian Johnny Vegas tried his luck with L plates back in 2003, while fellow comic Jack Whitehall had a go last year using an automatic.

Ed surely won't have any trouble beating Fresh Meat joker Jack, since he currently holds the record for the the slowest time since the challenge began.

The singer-songwriter confessed during an interview back in October that he was terrified of fast cars.

'I still can't drive. Sports cars scare the shit out of me because they go so fast,' he said.

There was no sign of fear on his face during his Top Gear lap, however, and the cheeky chappie looked like he wasn't having any trouble revving up his engine.

Ed was trying to beat the BBC2 show's record for the current Vauxhall Astra leaderboard, which is held by Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul.

AC/DC star Brian Johnson is in second place followed by Susan Boyle, who surprisingly proved herself to be more of a speed demon than the likes of Hugh Jackman and Benedict Cumberbatch.
