PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS PROFANITY.

Elton John gets personal.

Fresh from speaking at the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C., the British singer talked about his past addiction to sex, alcohol and cocaine.

As John prepares to mark 22 years of sobriety, he is celebrating his first number one album in Britain in twenty years - something he knows he couldn't have accomplished as an addict.

SOUNDBITE: Elton John, singer, saying (English)

"I wouldn't be here, I'd be dead. There are joyous things professionally and personally and I am content. I have nothing to complain."

The 65-year-old legend has penned a new book titled "Love is the Cure: On Life, Loss, and the End of AIDS," which he says is about salvation.

SOUNDBITE: Elton John, singer, saying (English)

"It's much better to share and to reach out. I learned that lesson. I wish I had that ability to be a bit more humble earlier on and to have a bit more humility but I'm afraid that's what addiction does to you. It doesn't register in that way. You think you know everything."

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised and donated $275 million U.S. dollars to fight the AIDS epidemic.

Alicia Powell, Reuters.
