Large crowds gathered in the Iranian capital Tehran for the funeral of the military commander, killed in a US attack on Friday. Qasem Soleimani was assassinated in neighbouring Iraq, on the orders of US President Trump.

Soleimani was one of the most powerful figures in Iran, he directed operations in the Middle East and his killing has marked a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, with wider implications for the entire region.

Iran's allies in the Middle East include Iraq, and General Soleimani had influence over a number of militias operating there. But concerns about Iran's growing influence was also one of the main drivers of mass protests in Iraq last year.

Tonight’s BBC News at Ten was presented by Huw Edwards, with contributions from the Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen and the Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg.
