"Matilda Mother" is the third track on the UK version of the LP (which I have on CD) that started it all for Pink Floyd, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, released in 1967. Although written by Syd Barrett, the lead vocal is sung by Richard Wright with Barrett singing the final verse. Despite the ordering of songs with "Astronomy Domine" set as the opening cut, "Matilda Mother" was the first song ever recorded for the album. As images from fairy tales and legends play out in the video, Matilda Mother (played by Sharon Tate from her role in the film Thirteen aka Eye Of The Devil, 1966-67), can be seen telling tales to the children in a castle setting in scenes not unlike part of a somewhat dark tale of enchantment.
