How fast is Smart LTE compared to 3G HSPA and does speed matter when you take into account data caps?

Warning: During the daytime, my speed is much slower and often I cannot surf at all. So the speeds shown in this video are BEST CASE and not what you should expect all the time.

Update: Smart have contacted me with their side of the "4G" story, see the end of this video description to see it.

At the time of posting this video, Smart have an LTE pocket wifi on sale for P1995 and a 3G HSPA+ pocket wifi, branded as "4G" on sale for P995. Both are absolutely amazing deals!

In this video I test the speed of LTE (4G) against HSPA+ (3G) and there's no doubt that LTE is blazing fast.

But with a maximum data cap of 800MB a day, what's the point in having that extra speed? You can't stream HD content because you'll consume your data cap too soon. So does it really matter if you have 25Mbps on LTE or 7Mbps on 3G? Both are going to load your Twitter, Facebook and Clash of clans at pretty much the same speed.

The benefit of LTE is when you take advantage of Smarts "All night Bundle" which is an interesting name considering you only get 4 hours. Putting that aside, you can avail of that promo between 11PM and 5AM and it will give you 4 hours of completely uncapped LTE. I managed to download around 35GB in that time period.

Hi there! We do not hide the fact that Our Smart Bro 4G pocket WiFi can only connect up to 3G/HSPA/HSPA+ network. The "4G" branding does not pertain to the actual network. It stands for the 4th generation of device that we offer.

If you will check our website, we have a separate device labeled as Smart Bro LTE Pocket WiFi which is capable of connecting to 4G/LTE.

The pocket wifi web interface contradicts what Smart have said because when it connects to HSPA+, it specifically adds '4G' so the text reads "SMART Prepaid 4G-HSPA+"

But on their old modems it's considered 3G-HSPA+. It's hard for Smart to get their story straight when there's so many different things they have to hide to pull off this trick.
