LYRICS:

Starlight
Shining down on this cold dark night
Where I find
I’m in my thoughts with you

Even though I am alone
I know that I’m not alone
For you’re with me
All along the way

And time tells, me that
Change is on the way
Change me on the inside
Revive me today

Oh is what I’m living for
Worth Christ dying for
Change me today

And let today be, the day of my salvation
Change me, through holy consecration
Reigning, your glory, through my life

Amidst a crooked, perverse generation
You’re releasing, a holy nation
A people, chosen, to shine like the stars

Your starlight
Reminds me to shine
That the world may know
That we are not alone

And let today be, the day of my salvation
Change me, through holy consecration
Reigning, your glory, through my life

Amidst a crooked, perverse generation
You’re releasing, a holy nation
A people, chosen, to shine like the stars

Your starlight
Reminds me to shine
That the world may know
We are not alone

We call the nations, to awaken and get ready
For you’re patient, but your hand is sure and steady
To draw forth harvest, revive us now

Your starlight
Reminds me to shine
That the world may know
That we are not alone

Starlight's Meaning:

The song Starlight, begins with a picture painted of one standing under a starlit sky. The purpose of such imagery: “cold, dark night, alone, change” is to give the listener the sense of a desperate position they are in, with a crossroad that lies before them.

The distant view of the stars then turns to a deepened view of the individual- that then becomes a prayer… a cry… and then a declaration.

“And let today be, the day of my salvation”… “Your releasing a holy nation” reverberates as an anthem proclamation of personal victory while situationally recognizing the dire circumstances around them
(“Amidst a crooked, perverse generation” -Phil 2:15). The song ends with seeing the stars differently. Not as a distant, disconnected truth, but a living reality within that serves as a reminder whenever one looks up at the light.

This imagery is also to fly in the face of the reference made by secular humanist Carl Sagan, who referred to us as being merely made of “star stuff” who, by saying so, implied that life has no meaning. “That the world may know, that we are not alone” comes full circle to the song’s intro. The growth of the character in the song goes from being alone and calling for personal revival, to selflessly recognizing the need to help others see the light of God, as seen shining through the people of God (They will know we are Christians by our love -John 13:35).
