The record for longest punt in NFL history is held by Steve O'neal of the New York Jets. The ball was snapped on the one yard line, but O'neal made a booming kick, which bounced and rolled all the way to the 1 yard line. After the footage I show cuts off, Denver returner Bill Thompson returns the ball to the two yard line, where he is tackled by a Jets' gunner.

It is the longest possible NFL punt without being a touch back.

This record was set on September 21st, 1969, at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado. O'Neal was playing for the New York Jets facing the Denver Broncos. Despite this amazing punt, Denver pulled out the victory: 21-19.

While this is officially the longest punt in NFL history, there are records of a 99 yard punt by Jim Thorpe in 1923 for the Canton Bulldogs, although that record is unconfirmed.

This video was Featured by CBS Sports and FOX Sports. Thank you guys so much!

Edit: Looking back, it's really obvious that the returner, Bill Thomson, touched the ball as it was descending before it hit the ground. You cans see the speed of the ball slow down just a little bit (especially in 0.25 speed) before it hits the ground. If the refs noticed this, the record would be taken away and shortened to about 75 yards, and a -23 yard return. Meh, it's been 50 years, so who cares?
