The long-planned Turkish military operation in north-east Syria has been launched. Kurdish forces, which control the area, reported heavy airstrikes and widespread panic.
Turkey’s decision was prompted by President Trump’s announcement that US troops would withdraw from the region where thousands of captured Islamic State fighters are being held by Kurdish forces.
