A feature on the importance of the Oramics machine on the development of electronic music technology as shown on the BBC's technology magazine show "Click" on 8th January 2012. There are some clips of Daphne Oram almost certainly from the documentary "The Same Trade As Mozart" a UK BBC programme originally broadcast on 3rd August 1969. The Oramics machine was discovered in a barn in France a few years ago and at the moment resides in the Science Museum in London until December 2012.

Professor Harald Haas coined the term Li-Fi in 2011. The technology uses ordinary LED room lights to transmit data around the house. The disadvantage of traditional Wi-Fi routers is that multiple devices in a space can interfere with each other. Li-Fi however can use multiple lights in a room without interference.
As connected devices become more popular it is predicted that Wi-Fi networks will not be able to cope with demand.
Li-Fi enables devices to use their in-built stand by LED lights to transmit data. As LED lights become more popular, multiple companies are looking into using Li-Fi including, Disney Research and the Berlin-based, Fraunhofer Institute. BBC Click's Talia Franco spoke to Prof Harald Haas, the original inventor of Li-Fi.

Microsoft Research says it is close to perfecting software that can measure tumours accurately in 3D from normal Computerised Tomography (CT) scans. The job of determining the extent of tumours is currently done by hand with limited accuracy.
The "Inner Eye" project could make the process 40 times quicker and suggest treatments that could prove the most effective.

The US firm says the amount is similar to what it costs to send packages by road, but it takes it much less time to make drop-offs.
The operation is thought to be the first commercial regular drone delivery service anywhere in the world.

The Osterhout Design Group (ODG) has shown off a pair of augmented reality glasses costing more than £1,800. The glasses contain lenses that project images or graphics in front of the wearer's vision. BBC Click's Marc Cieslak tried out the glasses at this year CES show in Las Vegas.
A robot which learns like a child - by trial and error - has been developed by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.
Brett (Berkeley Robot for the Elimination of Tedious Tasks) used its deep learning algorithm to perform various tasks from putting hangers on a rack to screwing a cap on a bottle of water.
The researchers believe that if a robot can learn autonomously, it will be more successful at completing tasks in the real world.

A tactile, virtual reality (VR) system for mice has been created by researchers at the HHMI Janelia Research Campus in Virginia, USA. The system uses a pair of movable walls to "tickle" the whiskers on each side of a mouse's face. By moving the walls in the shape of a virtual tunnel the mice can be tricked into thinking they are inside the real thing. The team hope that the research will eventually help us understand our own brains better, including diseases such as Alzheimer's. By using VR systems like this the research team say they "can get more data and higher quality data from each animal and thereby reduce the number of animals we need to use in experiments". A professional cinema camera which allows the focus, aperture and perspective to be changed after it has been filmed has been developed by technology company Lytro.
The 755 RAW megapixel camera uses "light-field" technology to record the direction and intensity of light, capturing footage in 3D.
The distance of objects or people in front of the lens is also recorded allowing them to be isolated and replaced more easily in post-production than using blue or green screen technology.
The company released its first consumer stills camera which used "light field" technology in 2012.

BBC Click's Marc Cieslak takes an early look at Tom Clancy's The Division - an online, third-person, role playing shooter. The story takes place in a post pandemic, devastated mid-town Manhattan.
Infected bank notes carrying the smallpox virus have spread disease and death as they are passed from person to person. Order has broken down, criminals have escaped from prison and militias have armed themselves. The player assumes the role of a Division agent - a secretive organisation armed with the job of bringing order to the chaos that has engulfed New York.
Missions can be attempted as single player, co-operative with online team mates or player versus player.
The game is released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows on 8 March.

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in the US, have adapted a low cost MakerBot 3D printer to print with biological materials. The team hope their work could one day lead to a world in which transplants are no longer necessary to repair damaged organs.
Traditional 3D printers build hard objects layer by layer, typically from materials such plastic or metal. Printing with soft materials has been highly challenging because each layer requires sturdy support from the layers below.
The researchers developed a new method enabling them to print with soft materials such as collagens, alginates and fibrins that naturally appear in the body. To date, medical 3D printing has been mainly used to create prosthetics. BBC Click's Talia Franco spoke to Prof Adam Feinberg about his team's breakthrough research.

Draper’s Dragonfl-eye is a living dragonfly with a solar-powered backpack that can control its movements using light pulses.
By genetically engineering the “steering neurons” of the dragonfly, researchers hope to be able to use the insect to get to areas larger drones cannot reach.

A prototype companion robot which will cost less than $700 (£452) has been shown off in London. Buddy, made by French outfit BlueFrog Robotics, has raised more than three times its target on crowdfunding website Indiegogo. The vehicles can be booked by residents only and used for up to 3 hours at a time". Co founder Aric Ohana: "If we include car sharing in communities, we should be able to reduce parking requirements for new developments".

A smartphone designed to be easy to repair and upgrade goes on sale this week. The internal components of the Fairphone 2 are split into modules which can be replaced with minimal tools or expertise. The company behind the phone hopes this will encourage owners to keep their phones for longer, rather than regularly changing to new devices. Fairphone say they aim to create a more ethical device with an emphasis on reparability and sourcing key minerals used in the phone's construction from conflict-free areas.

Dyson has revealed its first personal care product - a hairdryer that it says is quieter and less damaging to hair than a conventional machine.
It is the first hairdryer powered by a miniaturised air pump in the handle, using the same airflow principles as Dyson's desk fan products.
The company said it had invested £50m in the development of the device.

There's a town in West Virginia where there are tight restrictions on mobile signal, wifi and other parts of what most of us know as simply: modern life. It means Green Bank is a place unlike anywhere else in the world.
Green Bank sits at the heart of the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000 square mile (33,669 sq km) area where certain types of transmissions are restricted so as not to create interference to the variety of instruments set up in the hills - as well as the Green Bank Observatory, there is also Sugar Grove, a US intelligence agency outpost.

A new robot developed by one of the original founders of Skype could help reduce the price we pay for deliveries - and possibly make them free in the future. Starship drives autonomously to the shopper's doorway and then texts an alert message to announce its arrival. The low speed robot is designed to drive for a few miles from a local hub or a shop and can only carry small loads.
The company is currently testing its prototypes and hopes to launch pilot services in the UK next year.

Peel Island is located off the coast of Queensland in Australia. In 1907 the island was designated as a quarantined hospital for those with leprosy - a so called “Lazaret”.
Hundreds from the mainland were sent there in exile for a life sentence - with over half dying in isolation. Since closing in the late 50s, many of the unique buildings have fallen into disrepair and the majority of buildings are now too dangerous to enter.

Following successful demonstrations of the RiVR Virtual Reality platform at the UK Emergency Services Show in September, BBC Click requested RiVR to be featured in a ‘special programme’ highlighting the way in which innovation is changing the landscape and opportunities within the blue light services and in particular Fire and Rescue.
During the last three weeks BBC Click have attended two specific locations where the RiVR innovation team have been working alongside industry professionals experiencing RiVR photo realistic interactive virtual reality training scenarios. These were specifically created with predetermined training and development outcomes.
The first location visit was to the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service headquarters where Kat Hawkins and Omar Mehtab experienced RiVR realism for the first time. Also present was Andrew Quine, Leicestershire’s lead fire Investigator and Paul Speight who has been appointed VR lead for the UK. They had the opportunity to ‘walk’ the two reporters through the scenario, which was just a small example of a larger suite of scenes available via the RiVR platform. They investigated a photo-realistic fire damaged room, picking up and examining any one of a hundred and eighteen interactive objects. These could be photographed and transported to a virtual laboratory for further examination. Potential sources of fire were discussed and then they were able to be immersed in a 360 degree video of the actual fire enabling them to understand if they had identified the true cause.
The second location visited was the Department of Science and technology Laboratory, in St Alban's, where our reporters were hosted by Mike Ferguson. Mike has been exploring new ways of training ‘first responders’, and has collaborated with RiVR to create a virtual reality crime scene. In one of the scenes the reporters experienced being first on the scene of a brutal murder and were able to interact with objects, as well as checking pulses on bodies that they found. The object of this asset is to determine the appropriate behaviours and actions of individuals in a stressful environment.
The RiVR scenes and monitoring of outcomes are made possible as the scenes are created using photogrammetry and ‘managed’ by the RiVR platform which processes the VRM (virtual reality monitor). This allows a trainer to observe the candidate in the scene remotely or on a local monitor. Everything is recorded from a first person, third person and birds eye view, giving a comprehensive record of the entire training session.
The speed of development in VR is unprecedented and RiVR believes that collaboration is not only desirable but necessary to meet the needs of clients and to advance technology to end users that benefit the way in which humans learn, to this end RiVR is delighted to have valuable relationships with Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Leica geosystems, Pico and 4dmax.
Although VR can be applied to most learning situations, it is most commonly used for the following reasons:
● Safety (in environments where it would be dangerous for those experiencing it).
● Replicability (to allow multiple participants to experience the same environment).
● Learning (to make mistakes in an environment where critical errors are less impactful).
● Rarity (where environments are experienced rarely enough to require ongoing development).
● Cost effective (Often cheaper as only has to be created once but has multi usage)
VR, as part of a blended learning package, allows students to immerse in the world of experience and heightens their sensitivity to the world. It guides the students so that they can draw meaning from their first-hand experiences and elevate their level of thinking. There is no replacement for true experiential learning, but RiVR now provides a solution to start to fill in the gap between the classroom and real life.

When the 2020 Olympics gets underway in Tokyo, Project Sky Canvas hopes to paint the sky above with shooting stars.
The plan is to put a micro-satellite in orbit that will fire tiny particles into the atmosphere.
As they fall to Earth they will burn up and become on-demand shooting stars that can be directed to any chosen location and be seen within a radius of up to 200km (124 miles).

An app originally developed to help teach Malawian schoolchildren maths has also boosted the learning of children in the UK, according to a study. Researchers at Nottingham University subjected the onebillion app to a randomised control trial, testing it against other teaching apps and against no app. In both Malawi and in the UK, researchers found the onebillion app helped to greatly boost children's maths knowledge compared to the other options. Education in Malawi is often basic - classes of 90 pupils are normal and some children have to share one teacher with 300 classmates.

An interactive holographic display that can create 3D digital worlds inside a special pyramid shaped display has raised more than four times its crowdfunding target. The device, developed by Vancouver based H+Technology, sits on a table top and can be viewed from numerous different angles. Using a smartphone or tablet users can interact with 3D objects 'inside' the pyramid. The company hopes that the device will help people to interact with technology more naturally in groups, rather than alone. Surveillance software which can snoop on mobiles, tablets and PCs was stolen from the vendors, Hacking Team, last month.
The attackers published the software on several internet sites making it openly available to download. UK Security firm, 4Armed, gave BBC Click's Dan Simmons a live demonstration of the mobile phone spyware that has been sold to more than 30 governments and intelligence agencies globally. 4Armed said that using it to spy on someone without their consent would be against the law.

Para mahasiswa di Malang berniat untuk mengurangi pembukaan lahan perkebunan kelapa sawit dengan menghadirkan alternatif bahan baku minyak goreng, yakni ulat Jerman. Tidak hanya minyak goreng, produk olahan lainnya, seperti mentega juga bisa dibuat dari minyak ulat.
Selain itu, ada juga robot berukuran nano yang bisa masuk ke dalam tubuh untuk membantu mengeluarkan objek asing yang tidak sengaja tertelan.
Inovasi lainnya yang juga diharapkan bisa membantu kehidupan manusia adalah mobil tanpa supir dan aplikasi pemantau kucing.
