Barbara Streisand and Barry Levinson are teaming up for the long-planned screen version of the musical Gypsy through STX Entertainment.
Streisand would play the classic stage mother Mama Rose in a new screen adaptation of the classic 1959 musical by Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents that contains such signature anthems as “Some People,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and the show-stopping “Rose’s Turn.”
Streisand, who will produce with Joel Silver, had been developing the project at Universal, but that studio put it into turnaround in October.
Negotiations are now underway to set it up at STX, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
