Hundreds of protesters flooded onto Fifth Avenue, New York City, on Tuesday, to rally outside Trump Tower against US President Donald Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme.

Protesters shouted into megaphones slogans into the crowd. One demonstrator said, "Almost one million people will lose their jobs because of a DACA repeal and the loss of TPS," while another stressed, "We have to force this country to recognise its dependence on migrant communities."

During the demonstration, some of the participants held a sit in, blocking traffic on the major Manhattan road. 34 protesters were reportedly detained by police and are dues to be issued with summonses.

The administration of former US President Barack Obama established the DACA programme in 2012 to enable migrants, who were brought illegally to the country as children, to apply for a temporary right to study or work in the USA. A successful application would mean that they are able to defer the threat of possible deportation for another two years.
