A short-film about an old man who once was a race car driver, but now, retired, he misses it and wants to feel the speed one more time... or a gruesome story about a chicken life, depends on how you look at it :D

There are many things I think could be improved to make this look better, but this had to be done in a week so it was quite rushed.

The inspiration for this short-film actually came from Forza Horizon 4. I was playing with a friend and we ended up doing a race that starts uphill with old Ford Anglias, and when the race started, we hit the gas and yet we started rolling backwards. I think the max speed we achieved during that race was 40mph. That said, it was one of the funniest races I ever did and I thought why not, let's make an animation out of it.

Dad Where’d You Go? | 爸，你去哪里了？

My fourth year film from Sheridan College!

The story is inspired by my experience growing up in Shanghai and falling in love with the city!

My one minute thesis film is a sequence part of a bigger project than I am still working on!

Lila, a young girl from the French countryside, sneaks into her dad's suitcase to travel the world with him. In China, her dad accidentally swaps suitcases with a Chinese man, and when the suitcase is finally opened, Lila is astonished to discover a family of Chinese people instead of her dad!
Amused and surprised, the Chinese family joins Lila in an exciting adventure through Shanghai to find her father.

In a time of valiant knights, beautiful princesses and battling sorcerers, a humble hero named Ruslan fatefully meets the King's daughter, Mila.

Along with his companions, Ruslan must overcome the forces of evil to save his beloved.

About the filmmakers: David Nicolas and Laurent Nicolas are known for creating and directing cult animated series “Lascars” and “Life According to François-Remy Jeansac” and “F is For Family”. Their work has been awarded at Imagina, Annecy and D&AD. In 2014 the Nicolas brothers team up with visual artist and director Kevos Van Der Meiren and create the collective Meat Department. Black Holes is their latest collaboration.

In a small town in the old west, a lone and weary gunfighter enters a saloon. As he walks through the room surrounded by the people of the town, a voice begins narrating the scene, telling us exactly who this gunfighter is. But unlike every classic western to use the
narrator trope, the characters in this film can hear the voice.
This omniscient narrator quickly begins divulging the deepest, darkest secrets of the people in the saloon. He exposes infidelity, homosexuality, prejudice and even a bit of bestiality. As the story unfolds it becomes evident that the voice is a bloodthirsty bastard that wants nothing more than to see the people of the town kill each other in a needless gunfight.

Through hand-built sets, custom-painted action figures and over 90 hours of painstaking animation, “Indomation” is a whimsical tribute to the filmmakers and artists who brought us the Jurassic franchise - a series of films that has inspired countless artists and storytellers, myself included, from across the globe.
The first stories I ever told were as a kid in the backyard with my Jurassic Park toys. Like so many others, that original film provoked my imagination and would ultimately lead me down the path to becoming a filmmaker. It’s fitting then that my first animated short film would feature Mattel’s Indoraptor figure, a toy that children today are no doubt bringing to life in their own imaginations.
I hope you'll enjoy watching the film as much as I did making it.

The film takes place 75 million years ago in Cretaceous Alberta and follows a male lambeosaurus searching for a mate during the changing spring season.
This is the third short film in my "Dinosauria Animated Series" and was the most difficult film of the series so far.
I'm really happy with how it turned out though. I'm particularly proud of the atmosphere and visuals on display. I think this might just be the prettiest film I've ever made! The backdrops are certainly the most detailed I've ever produced for a short film and I don't think I've ever been this ambitious with my colour-use before.
This film paints a serene but bittersweet world that I'm really, really proud of! ^_^

"Empathy can feel in short supply in today’s world, but the ability to place yourself in someone else’s shoes is an important skill when it comes to understanding others. If it isn’t something you possess in your toolkit, you might need a little help and film (and storytelling in general) is a great aid in eliciting such reactions. Les Chaussures de Louis (Louis’ Shoes) is a short looking to do just that, as it tells its story through the eyes of a young autistic boy in the hope of raising awareness and resonating with viewers.

Created at Ecole MoPA, by Jean-Géraud Blanc, Théo Jamin, Ka Yu Leung and Marion Philippe, the five-minute animation focuses on eight-and-a-half-year-old Louis on his first day at a new school. Asked to introduce himself to his new classmates, this is an important moment for the titular protagonist of Louis’ Shoes, as he wants them to understand his unique perspective of the world. Confused by the ritual of waving to say hello and with an aversion to eye contact, will his fellow pupils accept Louis for who he is? Or will they shun him and his blue, size 33 shoes?

Initially inspired by autistic philosophers, the quartet behind Louis’ Shoes recognised that for their film to be successful and genuine, pre-production was going to play an essential role and so they set out on what they describe as “a journey of interviews and research”. Basing their character and his experiences around the testimonials of people with autism, the team were able to create a sense of authenticity throughout their short and this, in turn, helps with the feeling of warmth and understanding that radiates from their story.

“Throughout the film, we thrive to create Louis’ particular way of seeing the world, which is at the same time a way of seeing ourselves, by walking, together, in his shoes”, the four co-directors explain. “The theme is specific but the struggle is universal. When the audience sees how Louis overcomes his difficulties with courage and sincerity, hopefully, it can resonate with people … even those without autism, to have the courage to accept and understand”.

Recognising CG animation as “the best tool” to do justice to the inspiring stories of their interviewees, Louis’ Shoes pairs its moving storyline with an affable aesthetic that welcomes its audience into Louis’ world. With the majority of the supporting characters framed so we never see their faces (until the very last scene), the team do a good job of inserting viewers in the gaze-avoiding point-of-view of their young protagonist. For some, this approach could have been limiting, but if anything it has forced this young team of animators to really push out their creativity and think of new ways of framing scenes. With so many shots from floor level or from Louis’ PoV, things could have got tiresome very quickly, but at just over five minutes in length, it never feels gimmicky or overstays its welcome.

Selected at festivals worldwide, Louis’ Shoes picked up the Gold medal in International Animation at the 2021 Student Academy Awards. Released online for a short period, as it’s hoping to be shortlisted for the Best Animated Short Film award at the 2022 Oscars, you should watch this charming little short while you can." - S/W Curator Rob Munday

This film is a sequel/spin-off to two previous animations of mine, "Being Pretty" and "No Monsters". It's the first of three animated shorts I have planned set in the universe.

I honestly forgot how much I like working in this universe. The aesthetic and tone of Autodale is really fun to work with. I know that this short doesn't really expand on the lore much beyond what we've already seen but that's why it was the idea I told first out of the three. This was a smaller story about manipulation and imagination that I really wanted to tell and I hope you guys enjoy it! ^_^

Dream - A CGI Animated Short Film, our capstone project at FPT University. We believe that through our film, not only young kids who desire to be astronauts, but everyone can get a good look at what they have wished for. "Here's the plan" ("Este es el Plan") is a 18-minute CG animated short film from Chile. Directed by Fernanda Frick and financed by the National Council of Culture and Arts, it took almost 2 years of work and a talented team of 32 professionals to finish it.
It had it's World Premiere at Nashville International Film Festival and it's national premiere at Festival Chilemonos 2017.

"Pour 668” is a sequel to “Pour 585." It's another metaphorical hand drawn animated film, this time a powerful pouring machine inflicts punishment on a wine glass for mixing liquids. Nuance is not allowed. You are free to choose.. as long as you choose red or orange. Choose a side or the consequences are severe. Tyranny within a society is the deliberate removal of nuance.

Synopsis:
You are free to choose, as long as you choose red or orange. A powerful pouring machine fills glasses with one of two selected colors. But one glass, a curious fellow with a spring in his step, has the tenacity to mix things up.

In this animation we continue the journey of numbered wine glasses, their heads filled with wine, or juice, or blood.. or ideology. In this installment of the series, the Machine is a great dispenser of these liquids. Each glass will grow with tribal enlightenment. But one glass, a curious fellow with a spring in his step, has the tenacity to mix two different liquids. At first this proves empowering as he whips and morphs himself to heights the others have not reached.. but the victory is short lived. The Machine reacts in alarm, and destroys the nuanced glass with brutality and precision. When the dust settles, the Machine gets back to the cycle of filling up glasses, but never mixing contents.

Director's notes:
For the first time ever, I’m going to publish this cartoon directly to Youtube instead of premiering at a film festival. That said, I am sending it out to my festival network post-premiere, so I'm hoping it will be in competition early next year (the film festival submission process happens months in advance). Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, I read every comment, and respond to those that are thoughtful or insightful.

This short film was drawn frame by frame using a Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet, in Adobe Animate. I also used Photoshop and After effects extensively. Since I'm a traditional animator, I still draw every frame. My process is straightforward, I construct a storyboard, build an animatic (which is a storyboard that is timed and rendered as a watchable movie). And then animate each shot individually. Those individual shots are put together with the background in After Effects (which is the modern day camera). I miss drawing directly on paper, but the process of scanning and coloring thousands of drawings took a very long time.

Director Bio:
Patrick Smith is known for his metaphorical hand drawn short films, as well as his experimental stop motion films. His formative years were spent as a storyboard artist for Walt Disney, and animation director for MTV. Smith is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the New York Foundation of the Arts.

Right at the outset, let me lay my cards on the table—this is a nearly perfect short. I qualify that statement with the “nearly”, only because I do not believe that art is a competition towards a platonic ideal. Though our site has taken on the challenge of serving as an arbitrator in questions of artistic and entertainment value, I still tend towards relativism in these matters. Taste is personal, and besides, perfection is often incompatible with innovation and risk-taking. Some of my favorite short films are decidedly imperfect and all the more enjoyable to me because of it.

But back to the point—Negative Space is practically perfect. Like so many shorts I admire, the film incorporates multitudes of seemingly contradictory qualities: at a mere 5 minutes, there is really no wasted space, and yet it is exceedingly spare. Based off a celebrated Ron Koertge poem that clocks in at only 150 words, it allows for moments of subtlety and contemplation that are so necessary in visual storytelling—those perfectly blocked shots, held for an extra moment, that drive home the rich emotional interiority of its characters. It’s simultaneously one of the most humanistic films of recent memory, but it also stars no humans. Its stop-motion animation is expressive, detailed and grounded, and yet it has no compunction about taking off on flights of fancy, segueing via delightful transitions into fantastical asides that play with scale and setting - S/W Curator, Jason Sondhi

Synopsis:
A group of french soldiers marches on a narrow duckboard pathway through the wartorn landscape of world war one. A direct mortar hit knocks out the officer. The group buries the victim and marches on toward the frontlines. Only one of them survives the hard and lethal journey through gas, mortar fire and the elements. The lone soldier faces the end of his road, ending in a huge cliff with at the bottom a gigantic meatgrinding machines. He drops to his knees in desperation. Suddenly he hears footsteps, he looks up and spots a lone german soldier advancing through the gas on the other side of the cliff. After a long faceoff the French soldier lifts his rifle and aims at his "mirror image"!

House Special creative director Kirk Kelley in Portland, Oregon: "'A Tale of Momentum & Inertia' is one of our Short Stuff™ projects. The driving force behind Short Stuff™ is to create short animated films from ideas our staff pitch and then develop – ideas we think are funny and interesting, and ultimately reflect and hone our collective studio voice. "The fun thing about our Short Stuff™ projects is that the entire studio has opportunities to contribute and try out new skill sets that the schedules for client projects typically don't allow. People take on new and different roles as they pitch in to help make the shorts happen. "This project was pitched by Kam Gates, who was a staff CG animator at the time, based on an idea of his and his long-time friend and writer Allan Turner. At its heart it's a creation myth, only this world has a creator of questionable benevolence.

"The final story stemmed from bouncing ideas back and forth about what this creator of mountains would do if he made a slight mistake, how he would correct it and what the consequences might be. Have you ever stepped on an anthill? "Giving the world a tactile feeling that was also graphic in nature was the constant challenge. This applied not only to the environment but also the main character, composed entirely of rocks. He needed to be expressive and empathetic for the viewers to connect with him, while at the same time feeling completely rigid and imposing as a massive bundle of rocks. "Kam has a background in sculpture, so using actual rocks he gathered from where he grew up in Lake of the Woods, Ontario, the initial design was conceived.

"Scale and rigging of the character [were the main technical challenges]. The first hurdle was to make the character move in a way which felt more like plate tectonics than bones and muscle. This involved sliding rocks instead of bending joints and is a unique challenge to make the rigging of the body feel both natural and solid. "Next, the world had to feel massive to telegraph the character's physical scale. The number of trees built to fill the forest is mind-boggling. We even added trees to his body. And then a lot of work was done to destroy all of those trees." In a strange, dark box lives a group of box-headed elderly humanoid creatures with roots instead of legs. Most of these creatures are sunken into a catatonic sleep, unaware of anything outside their hermetic, sealed-off world.

But one of them emerges from the crowd, stunned into consciousness. Young and growing, the creature starts to cause a joyful ruckus, but struggles against the disapproval and rancor of the rest of his box-dwellers. But then the youngster begins to fight back, looking for a way outside the box but coming against its most oppressive forces yet.

Writer/director/animator Dusan Kastelic's short animation is a surreal yet exuberant allegory about the pleasures and perils of non-conformity, being an individual and pushing through obstacles to a new level of consciousness.

The narrative takes the phrase "outside the box" and spins it into a deeply imaginative, hypnotic narrative that resembles a fairy tale. Not a sanitized children's version of a fairy tale, however: the film instead resembles the original European fairy stories, which were dark, psychologically complex and disquieting in their emotional violence.

The images are nightmarish, with their evocations of distorted flesh and murky colors. But the expressiveness of the creatures and attention to detail -- created in open-source 3-D software Blender -- are remarkable from a technical and emotional level, and draw in viewers with a powerful combination of gesture, sound and storytelling.

Despite the claustrophobic world portrayed in the film, there are splashes of zany humor and joy, particularly as the younger creature expresses its unbridled childlike self. The musical score and sound design by Mateja Staric go a long way to create contrast between stultifying conformity and youthful individualism, as well as keeping the narrative at a consistently engaging pace.

Despite its strange appearance, the uninhibited joyousness and high spirits of the newly emergent creature are so much like the energy of children, and viewers cannot help but relate. Yet "The Box" becomes genuinely sad and painful as the youngster is repeatedly brought down and cut down to size, and confronts the mechanisms of the box itself that keep its inhabitants docile and in the dark.

Watching that struggle becomes a powerful metaphor for the oppression and conformity that we all face, whether it's the box that society puts us inside or the ones we put ourselves in. To watch the creature struggle against a dark, narrow world is hard, and yet, as the creature discovers, as long as you can feel a spark of an essential self, there is always a way towards the light.

"Did you know that Jon Favreau "shot" the latest Lion King in VR? That the reason The Mandalorian is able to produce such epic landscapes on a TV production timetable is that it is filmed in front of a giant LED screen which adapts to the camera in realtime? Oh, you did. Disney is the biggest name in entertainment and never suffers from a lack of publicity, so it makes sense that you've encountered one of the many trend pieces that describe the emerging field of "Virtual Production" and how it is a "gamechanger" and "the future of filmmaking".

You may know this, but it is one thing for these bleeding-edge tools to be in the hands of creators at multi-billion dollar studios, what you might not know is how close we are to their adoption by the rest of us.

Today's short is truly a fascinating glimpse at the current state of play. From acclaimed VFX artist Sava Zivkovic, Irradiation is a 9min mood piece that crosses sci-fi horror with "Chernobyl"-inspired imagery, creating a heady CG animated short long on atmosphere and menace. Many of the usual hallmarks of a sci-fi proof-of-concept apply here: detailed, photo-realistic characters that might trick more than a few of you, terrific motion, cinematic direction, and detailed environmental worldbuilding are all featured. What is even more notable than the end product though is how it came together; both its workflow and the film's status as a personal passion project.

Using a realtime game engine, a motion-capture facility, and off-the-shelf visual assets, Zivkovic creates a million-dollar-looking animation largely by himself. Irradiation is great, but it's not terribly dissimilar from work we see all around us—in movies and TV, or advertising and gaming. However, as recently as a couple of years ago, you'd expect work of this quality to require at least a small studio and/or for it to take months of labor. Instead, Zikovic produced Irradiation in 4 weeks in a manner more akin to an indie guerrilla shoot...
